Looking this good doesn't come easy! Sports and Leisure: Part 1

I thought it would be fun to do a photo series on the stars and how they spent their down time from the studio whether it was participating in a sport or just finding the time for leisure activities.  So if you're ready lets have a look at just what the stars did to keep those amazing physiques and their sanity while not shooting pictures.

Alice Faye at the lanes.

Betty Grable looking very comfortable on skates.  (I'm green with envy at those million dollar legs).

James Cagney relaxing at home with a good book.

Newlyweds Joan Crawford (stunning as a blonde) and Douglas Fairbanks enjoying a game of backgammon.

Deanna Durbin finding time to catch up on fan mail.

Alan Ladd trying out his pooches sea legs.

Don Ameche practicing his golf swing on his Hollywood estate.

Al Jolson and his wife getting a bit of sun in their backyard.

Jack Holt looking very dapper while getting ready for his polo match.

Olivia de Havilland getting a workout in.

Jayne Mansfield enjoying a day on the slopes.

Audrey Hepburn catching up on correspondence.

Thanks for joining me for a look at our fabulous stars on their days off and stay tuned for more of this photo series.
Have a great day!

  1. Great photos! I love the Deanna Durbin one!

  2. What a neat post! Love the photos!

  3. I wish I looked as beautiful as Oliva deHavilland doing a workout! She is just one of the lovelist women in film history. Your picture and captions are great!

  4. Tom,
I had a feeling you would like that pic of Durbin!

I'm glad you enjoyed the post. I look forward to seeing you back again.

I've got a few pics of the stars on some hilarious old gym equipment that I'll be posting. But how about those roller skates on Betty? Those things look like death traps! I don't know how anyone skated on those things and lived to tell about it.

  5. As a fervent fan of Deanna Durbin it is nice to see a relaxing Deanna reading her fanmail, as well as the other great stars out of the past.
They are, and in my opinion Deanna in particular, everlasting.......

  6. oh what some stunning photoes.i love them!:)))

  7. Hi Jan,
I'm glad you liked the post! I love the old candids and it seems Durbin has a lot of admirers.

I'm glad you enjoyed this one! Stay tuned for more fun candids.

  8. I have a few photos of Carole Lombard bowling (although tennis was her primary athletic activity), and in one of them she looks to be bowling at the same lanes we see Faye in. (No, I doubt they were in a league together.) I'll see if I can dig out that photo and link it to you over the next day or two.

  9. Beautiful pictures... Audrey: elegance, glam...
    Great photos!.

  10. Hi VP!

How fun that they bowled at the same place but I doubt there were many places they would feel comfortable going. Please link that pic when you get time. I can't wait to see it. These candids are always so much fun.

    Thanks Natalia!
I don't think it was possible for Audrey to take a bad photo! Such an adorable little pixie and so stylish.
