He was born in 1934 and adopted in 1937. He was briefly engaged in the 50's to actress Jill Ireland who dumped him for David McCallum, later The Man From Uncle. After Ben shut down "Life With The Lyons" in 1961 Richard worked as a disc jockey on Radio Luxembourg, and hosted a short lived record show on the BBC with sister Barbara. He later became a photographer for the British Film Institute, his show business career having died in the early sixties.
Regards
Phil Watson
howsteanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15102636333230566945noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5288732393699331930.post-28905334808061435132013-09-08T22:13:53.915-07:002013-09-08T22:13:53.915-07:00Anon,

Luke wears tight fitting clothes whereas Chaplain wears loose/baggy pants. The character is an admitted copy of Chalplain, because many studios saw Chaplain's success and wanted to imitate it and bank the money/profit. Lloyd wasn't too happy with it and changed some tings about it, but it was still a copy.

Here is another blog (not mine) that explains some of the motivations. http://legendsoflaughter.wordpress.com/2010/10/31/the-comedy-crypt-by-matthew-c-hoffman/

I must say I was relearning my Harold Lloyd and was curious about learning of Bebe Daniels (I just picked up Criterion's 2013 movie of the Lloyd classic : "Safety Last" and was perusing the extras). As noted by a comment below, maybe Hal Roach "pushed" them together, but it did not take much. They were very much in love and they were great dancers: Several times it is mentioned that Lloyd and Bebe would go out dancing and win several dance competitions (Prize money for best dancers was a *thing* in the roaring rich 1920's). In some of the films, you can see examples of both Bebe and Lloyd dancing and I must say, they really are a good fit.

I know Lloyd was practical, but I think Bebe was ambitious in her own way and not wanting to be too overshadowed: She wanted to be a dramatic actress. I think Lloyd may've been more hurt than Bebe when she left as it says in the documentaries I've seen (on Lloyd), to "pursue more dramatic roles". Lloyd also, early on, wanted to do drama and made some attempts at it, but they never panned out (One picture, "Grandma's Boy", was meant to introduce a more dramatic/"straight" story on Harold Lloyd, but it did not do well for preview audiences so certain scenes were re-shot and editted in to gain more laughs. I should also mention Lloyd was the first to use Preview audiences as a way to test films and see what worked and what did not work and would re-work a film for general release.)

So doing a web-search and figuring out what happened to Bebe after splitting with Lloyd led me here.

I will also add in a possible speculation: In the Criterion. there are also three short films, two with Bebe. One is called "Young Mr. Jazz" and there is a commentary track on all three, where they mention various things, including places shooting happened. There is one scene that Harold drives up to Bebe's house and drives off with her (for a date/night-of-dancing) and the overprotective father follows. One commentor noted that he did not know the location of the house exterior where they shot. Well from that (drawn) picture above, I think it probably happened in front of Bebe's Beverly Hills' house. Sure looks the same.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5288732393699331930.post-25687532868710988352013-05-27T19:08:01.840-07:002013-05-27T19:08:01.840-07:00What happened to the adopted son? They were very fond of each other and spent a lot of time together and it could have led to marriage if Harold had not been afraid of commitment. (He later had a fairly successful marriage to film star Mildred Davies). They stayed in touch for the rest of their lives and when they met in London in 1970 he was still wearing her ring. Your comment about the weight of those elaborate headdresses reminded me of something.

Several years ago a local historical home had Norma Shearer's headdress on display that she wore in Marie Antoinette. It's a very different rendition of the story, but if you can clear your mind of the marvelous Bogart version, Bebe and Cortez made it a good movie.
